My Work
I was born and raised in the village of Banff in Banff Narional Park , The Canadian Rockies. Coming from a National Park rather than a city, town, or country has influenced my view of the world profoundly. We live in a world obsessed with politics and the modern tragedies in our own society and others around the world.. We live in a dangerous time in which threats both real and imagined abound. We need the transformative experience of beauty as an antidote to suffering. In a world often incomprehensible in it’s violence, nature still offers answers to many problems and solace to many cares.
I work on a project basis which allows me to explore specific issues of how we are moved by locale, subject matter, and circumstance. I work with images as narrative, suggestion, and inspiration. My background for many year has been in traditional nature and landscape photography. I use this background as a jumping off point to explore how we percieve and use nature in a modern context. Topics I am exploring with my work include the psychological effects of natural disasters, the counterpoint of wilderness and cultivated or manufactured landscapes, and the poignant juxtaposition of ancient cultural artefacts in the modern landscape.
Regardless of subject matter, my work is concerned with emotion and the liminal and fleeting moment which is the special prerogative of light. Of particular interest to me are the circumstances wherein past and present, the inner and outer world, and nature and culture come together in a singular illuminating moment.
